June 28, 2009
Greetings from Camp Lakewood, Effingham, Illinois!
Attending the 2nd rally of the season were Ron & Mickie Alberter, Alice, Scott & Jodi
Blind with Heavenlee, Richard & Susan Conley, Melvin and Nancy Coy, Herb & Sue Feltner,
Jim & Nina Francis, Jerry & Carol Hardacre, Jan & Bob Israelson, Joe & Tommie Nash,
Russell & Nancy Pearson with Dustin & Evelyn, Tom & Judy Robinson, Larry & Jolly Ann
Whitener, and Bob & Paula Young.
In the heat of the summer MAB Hosts Tom & Judy R, with Jim and Nina F wisely chose a
scenic and shady campground with an air –conditioned club room available at all times for
meals, social gatherings and a refuge from the 90+ degree temperatures – no campfires on
this outing! A ‘warm’ welcome was extended to first-timers Richard and Susan Conley and
Russell and Nancy Pearson with their grandchildren Dustin and Evelyn (their father is
currently serving in Iraq).
Friday am chef/host Tom, sporting a towel- over- the-shoulder Food channel style,
welcomed all early risers to a 5* breakfast buffet prepared by chef/host Judy and served
in the comfy temp of the A/C club room.
After breakfast, Nancy Coy conducted a First Aid Seminar which opened with a
demonstration and instruction for the use of an Automated Emergency Defibrillator (AED).
Discussion topics included the importance of travelers having their emergency information, i.
e. medicine lists, the presence of artificial joints or lenses, existing health concerns,
location of motor home and the presence of pets; making 911 calls, and using ICE numbers
on your cell phone. The signs of an impending stroke were reviewed: slurred speech,
crooked smile, unable to stick the tongue out straight and the ability to hold your arms out
in front of you evenly. The universal sign of choking (victim clutches throat with both
hands) and a demonstration of the Heimlich maneuver as applied to choking victim or
yourself. Nancy displayed a super complete First Aid Kit and stressed the importance of
carrying a basic First Aid Kit in your motor home.
Larry and Jolly Whitener had an interesting slide show of photos taken at the Lake George
Rally in New York. They thoroughly enjoyed this first regional rally held May 14-17.
At 4:11pm the convoy to Niemergs Steak House departed the camp. A wide variety menu
with reasonable pricing provided delicious meals for all.
At 8:30 pm the first scheduled ice cream run for all who desired to end the day with an
ice cream concoction at Culvers!
Saturday began with co-hosts Chef Jim Francis at the griddle serving up great pancakes,
plain and blueberry, and Chef Nina expertly mixing the batter.
Judy Robinson had requested a ‘special meeting’ for Ladies Only (no men allowed!) in the
club room following breakfast. Judy opened the meeting with a reading of “The Thief “
which set the tone of the meeting. Meeting was well attended . ‘Nuff said.
The traditional camp pitch-in supper was the usual gourmet buffet at 5:30 in the A/C
club room. Jerry Hardacre conducted a short business meeting after the evening meal.
The rains came but did not deter the 8:30 ice cream run. Although the agenda stated the
location was the Homewood Grill, all cars except one went to the Dairy Queen instead!
Chef Judy varied from the traditional Sunday am continental breakfast by serving a full
breakfast! Tom’s Devotional provided Nourishing Food for Thought via scripture readings
from the book of John and an inspiring story about the mother of William P. Young, author
of “The Shack”
All fathers present were given a surprise gift ‘goodie bag’ in honor of Father’s Day by the
hosts.
Thank You Tom and Judy, Jim and Nina for a well planned rally that provided great
information for those wanting to take in the points of interest around Effingham (including
the Cross at the Crossing) as well as plenty of time for just plain
visiting, with our MAB friends (especially in the A/C club room and on the ice cream runs!)
Concerns: Non-renewals by Kyle & Nancy Davis, Von & Hilda Greene. Joe & Betty Ernst
unable to attend this weekend due to illness (Joe), Hank and Addie were confined to their
home due to wind damage and loss of power (lots of thunderstorms this weekend). Addie
kept her freezer powered by the RV generator!
Our sympathy goes out to Bob & Paula Young for the death of Bob’s mother, Lillian M.
Young, 94, on Saturday, June 27, 2009 in Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline, IL.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009, in First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley,
IL. Visitation is one hour before the services at the church.

Through the Windshield
I had a real “downer” at the June rally. Our President announced that Nancy & Kyle Davis,
and Hilda & Von Greene were leaving MAB. Most of you know that both couples were
charter members, and so we owe them more than we could possibly repay. Kyle is also
remembered very fondly by our “sister” chapter, the MOB (Michigan-O-Bounders). Kyle
got a few Michigan Bounder owners together, helped them get organized and their chapter
started. Personally, I am going to miss all four of these nice folk a lot!
I had a real “upper” at the June rally. It was super seeing Melvin & Nancy Coy again
(they joined in May). I even talked Nancy into talking with us in June about what we should
have in our first aid kits, and to demonstrate and tell us about the A.E.D. which she
carries in their coach. Also, attending for the first time, and also joining the MAB were
Rick & Susan Conley and Russell & Nancy Pearson. So, we have four more great people who
are fitting in very nicely with the group.
This is an example that there will always be change (except for our traditional ice cream
runs) and we need to stay flexible and think more about what is going on through the
windshield than what is now behind us that we can see through the rearview mirrors. Of
course, we better remember the mistakes of the past so that
we don’t repeat them down the road!
One more comment, thank you, to our new BOA newsletter editor, Herb Feltner, for a
neat issue of the Bounder Beacon. I am sure it will get even better when you get more
freedom to roam and your talents will get to shine more.

The Presidents Corner
We just came home from a very delightful rally in Effingham, IL. It was loaded with fun
and fellowship with each other. There were attractions in the area to take advantage of
if we chose. Besides the morning breakfasts and the evening meals, the biggest organized
group function was the 8:30 ice cream run each evening. Many of us like ice cream, so
this has become a very enjoyable tradition for MAB. I was very pleased that we had two
guest BOA members join us and became MAB members before the weekend was finished.
We want to welcome Nancy & Russell Pearson, and Rick & Susan Conley to our chapter.
Thanks to Shabbona Creek RV we have another new member, from Davenport, IA, Frank &
Evangeline Teeple. We hope all these new members will participate in our rallies as much
as possible. The real benefits of BOA are at the chapter level. Our next rally, in South
Haven, MI at this writing will have 15 MAB members and 5 MOB members attending. This
should be another delightful rally. If you have not registered yet, you can still do so for
the July 16-19, 2009 rally. Nancy Coy, a new member last month, did a seminar for us
on first aid and the use of a AED Defibrillator. This was very interesting and
informative. There was some discussion about MAB purchasing an AED Defibrillator to
have at each rally in case we have an emergency. They cost around $1,300.00. If we
chose to purchase one, how do we pay for it? This is something to think about.
We hope to see you at the July Rally, until then safe Boundering and God Bless.
The BOA/BU Rally in September wants each chapter to provide a “Door Prize Basket.”
Please bring a unique item from your area of the country to contribute to the basket. You
can bring them to any of the rallies between now and September.
Safe Boundering and God Bless.
